The Citrus County Hospital Board is an independent special district created in 1949 by the Florida State Legislature for the purpose of creating and operating a public hospital system on behalf of the citizens and residents of Citrus County. In accordance with the Florida Heath Care Responsibility Act and the Florida Indecency Eligibility Certification Standards, the Hospital Board ensures that medically necessary healthcare is available to all residents of Citrus County, regardless of their ability to pay.

The five members of the Citrus County Hospital Board are volunteer public officers. After a thorough review by the Florida Ethics Commission and Florida Department for Law Enforcement, they are appointed by the Florida Governor and confirmed by the Florida Senate for four-year terms.

The Hospital Board is authorized and will ensure citizen ownership of the hospital with opportunities to acquire property, Partnership with HCA with essential staff to provide patient care services in a safe environment which is compliant with Federal and State standards.

In addition, the Hospital Board has express authority to ensure the provision of a hospital system for the purpose of erecting, equipping, building, expanding, altering, changing, maintaining, operating, leasing, and repairing said hospital and related facilities.
